Why Permanent magnet generator (PMG) poles are high

Why Permanent magnet generator (PMG) poles are high?

Permanent magnet generator is used to develop the alternator rotor excitation voltage. The output voltage of the PMG is given to the automatic voltage regulator. But the number of poles in the permanent magnet generator is always higher than the stator poles. Let’s see, the advantage of high number of poles.

  • Reduce the length of the winding and size of the machine (horizontal) as the number of poles increases.
  • Reduce the size of the permanent magnet. In a magnet, the flux in the corner area is higher than body surface of the magnet, therefore the reduced length of the stator coil, increases effective usage of the magnet.
