kVA to kVAR calculation

Reactive power Q(kVAR) in kilovolt amp reactive is equal to apparent power S(kVA) in kilovolt amp times of sine of power angle (φ). Hence for converting kVA to kVAR, the formula can be written as below,

Q(kVAR) = S(kVA) x sin (φ)

Or if you know the power factor means, you can convert the formula as below,

Q(kVAR) = S(kVA) x sin (cos-1(pf))

kVAR = kVA x sin (cos-1(pf))

Example:

Calculate the reactive power in kVAR of the 3.7kVA generator is operated at 0.8 pf.

kVAR = 3.7 x sin (cos-1(0.8))

= 3.7 x sin (36.86989765)

= 3.7 x 0.6

= 2.2 kVAR

Hence the 3.7 kVA generator can supply 2.2 kVAR of reactive power at 0.8 pf.
