Sonic Velocity Calculator:
Enter the values of Adiabatic Constant y, Universal Gas Constant R(J/mol-k), Absolute Temperature T(k) & Molecular Mass of the gas M(kg/mol) to determine the value of Sonic Velocity Vs(m/s).
Sonic Velocity Formula:
The Sonic Velocity Vs(m/s) in meter per second is equal to the SQRT of Adiabatic Constant y and multiply the Universal Gas Constant R(J/mol-k) = 8.314 J/mol·K in joule per mol kelvin and again multiply the Absolute Temperature T(k) in Kelvin is Divided by the Molecular Mass of the gas M(kg/mol) in kilogram per mol.
The Equation of Sonic Velocity can be writtern as,
Vs(m/s) = SQRT ( y * R(J/mol-k) * T(k) / M(kg/mol) )
Here,
Vs(m/s) = Sonic Velocity in meter per second
y = Adiabatic Constant
R(J/mol-k) = Universal Gas Constant in joule per mol kelvin
T(k) = Absolute Temperature in Kelvin
M(kg/mol) = Molecular Mass of the gas in kilogram per mol
Example problems for Sonic Velocity:
1)Calculate the Sonic Velocity and given for Adiabatic Constant = 3 , Universal Gas Constant = 8.314 J/mol·K , Absolute Temperature = 180K , Molecular Mass = 40kg/mol.
Answer
Vs = √ ( y * R * T / M )
Vs = √ ( 3 * 8.314 * 180 / 40 )
Vs = 10.59m/s.
2)Calculate the Molecular Mass and given for Adiabatic Constant = 3 , Universal Gas Constant = 8.314 J/mol·K , Absolute Temperature = 180K , Sonic Velocity = 10.59m/s.
Answer
Vs = √ ( y * R * T / M )
10.59 = √ ( 3 * 8.314 * 180 / M )
M = 40kg/mol.
