Mechanical Power Formula:

Mechanical power (MP) signifies the rate at which work is done or energy is transferred in a mechanical system, typically measured in watts (W). It reflects the amount of work performed per unit of time.

Work done represents the total amount of energy transferred by the machine to overcome resistance and cause movement.

The shorter the time it takes (t) for the machine to perform the same amount of work (W), the higher the mechanical power (MP).

The machine applies a force to overcome resistance and cause movement. The distance the object moves under the applied force is considered the displacement.

The product of force and displacement gives the total mechanical work done (W) by the machine.

Mechanical power, MP(W) in watts is calculated by dividing the mechanical work done, MW(J) in joules by time, t(s) in seconds.

Mechanical power, MP(W) = MW(J) / t(s)

MP(W) = mechanical power in watts, W.

MW(J) = mechanical work done in joules, J.

t(s) = time in seconds, s.

Mechanical Power Calculation:

  1. A machine performs 5000 joules (J) of work in 25 seconds. Calculate the mechanical power output of the machine.

Given: MW(J) = 5000J, t(s) = 25s.

Mechanical power, MP(W) = MW(J) / t(s)

MP(W) = 5000 / 25

MP(W) = 200W.

  1. A motor runs with a mechanical power output of 1000 watts (W) for 10 seconds. Calculate the total mechanical work done by the motor.

Given: MP(W) = 1000W, t(s) = 10s.

Mechanical power, MP(W) = MW(J) / t(s)

MW(J) = MP(W) * t(s)

MW(J) = 1000 * 10

MW(J) = 10000J.
