Laptop Power Consumption:

Hey, do you have a laptop? Do you know the electricity consumption of your laptop? The laptop contributes almost 2 to 5 % of your electricity bill.

A laptop is a device that is used to store and process the data both online and offline. The electricity consumption of the laptop is purely depending on the quality of the battery, screen size, RAM, Central processing unit, Graphics card, etc.

A typical laptop consumes 15 watts to 120 watts.

Laptop power consumption E (kWh-Laptop) is equal to the input current in amps times of the input voltage in volts divided by 1000.  The laptop power consumption formula can be written as,

E (kWh-Laptop) = I (A) x V (V) / 1000

Note that, we have not considered battery storage; we have just calculated the input current and input voltage when the battery is not connected to the laptop (I mean the laptop is connected in series with the charger). Here charger output current and the output voltage will be the laptop input current and voltage.

But in some cases, you may not able to calculate the input current and input voltage. During that time, you can calculate the laptop power consumption from the battery nameplate details.

Hence, the laptop power consumption E (kWh-Laptop) per hour in kWh is equal to the battery capacity P (Wh) in Watt-hour divided by 1000 times of the charge withstand time T(hr) in an hour. Hence the formula can be written as,

E (kWh-Laptop = P (Wh) / (1000 x T (hr))

For per day,

E (kWh-Laptop = P (Wh) * laptop working hours / (1000 x T (hr))

Per month,

E (kWh-Laptop = 30 x P (Wh) * laptop working hours / (1000 x T (hr))

Per year,

E (kWh-Laptop = 365 x P (Wh) * laptop working hours / (1000 x T (hr))

Note that, here we have considered the laptop work under the battery.

Example:

Let us take ASUS (8GB RAM, 8GB Graphic card, 19-inch screen) Laptop.

Laptop Power saving Tips:

  1. Do not keep the charger is switched on when it is not connected to the battery.
  2. Reduce the laptop screen brightness.
  3. Keep the laptop screen 30 to 40 degrees to get the optimized view. So, that we can reduce the screen brightness.
  4. Stop background applications such as cloud integration, desktop decoration application, bitcoin mining software, multiple antiviruses etc.
  5. Do not keep the laptop with the internet always. Since while connecting the laptop to the internet, which triggers the background application.
  6. Keep the laptop in a well-ventilated area or provide enough space at the bottom for exhausting the hot air.
