Effective Radiated Power Formula:

Effective Radiated Power (ERP) is the measure of the total power transmitted from an antenna, taking into account the power supplied to the antenna and the antenna’s gain.

Higher input power generally leads to higher ERP, as you’re providing more electrical energy for the antenna to radiate.

A higher gain antenna focuses the power in a specific direction, resulting in a stronger signal in that direction. This translates to a higher ERP compared to an antenna with lower gain.

A transmitter sends electrical power (IP) to the antenna. The antenna doesn’t radiate all the power perfectly in all directions. It concentrates or directs the power in specific directions based on its design.

ERP essentially compares this focused power to an isotropic antenna. It tells you how much power an isotropic antenna would need to radiate to achieve the same signal strength as the actual antenna in its strongest direction.

Effective radiated power, ERP(W) in watts is calculated by the product of input power, IP(W) in watts and antenna gain, G.

Effective radiated power, ERP(W) = IP(W) * G

G = antenna gain.

Effective Radiated Power Calculation:

  1. A transmitter supplies an input power of 100 watts (W) to an antenna with a gain of 3.981. Calculate the Effective Radiated Power (ERP).

Given: IP(W) = 100W, G = 3.981.

Effective radiated power, ERP(W) = IP(W) * G

ERP(W) = 100 * 3.981

ERP(W) = 398.1W.

  1. An antenna with a gain of 10 has an Effective Radiated Power (ERP) of 2000 watts (W). Calculate the input power to the antenna.

Given: ERP(W) = 2000W, G = 10.

Effective radiated power, ERP(W) = IP(W) * G

IP(W) = ERP(W) / G

IP(W) = 2000 / 10

IP(W) = 200W.
