Duct Velocity Formula:

The Duct Velocity V(FPM) in Feet Per Minute is equal to the Volumetric Flow Rate of the air from the duct CFM(Ft3/minute) in Feet cubic per minute is divided by the Cross-sectional Area A(Feet2) in feet square.

The Formula of Duct Velocity can be writtern as,

V(FPM) = CFM(Ft3/minute) / A(Feet2)

Here,

V(FPM) = Duct Velocity in Feet Per Minute

CFM(Ft3/minute) = Volumetric Flow Rate of the air from the duct in Feet cubic per minute

A(Feet2) = Cross-sectional Area in feet square

Calculation for Duct Velocity:

1)Determine the Duct Velocity and given for Volumetric Flow Rate = 1,000 ft3/min , Cross-sectional Area = 5 ft2.

Solution

V = CFM / A

V = 1000 / 5

V = 200FPM.

2)Determine the Cross-sectional Area and given for Volumetric Flow Rate = 1,000 ft3/min , Duct Velocity = 200FPM.

Solution

V = CFM / A

200 = 1000 / A

A = 5ft2.
