Dimmer Wattage Formula:

Dimmer wattage signifies the maximum electrical power a dimmer switch can handle safely. Measured in watts (W), it’s a crucial factor to consider when choosing a dimmer for your lighting needs.

The total wattage of the bulbs you connect to the dimmer should be equal to or less than the dimmer’s wattage rating. Exceeding this limit can lead to overheating and reduced lifespan of both the dimmer and the bulbs.

Here, F represents the number of bulb fixtures you plan to connect to the dimmer, and FW represents the wattage of each individual bulb. The factor 1.25 acts as a safety buffer, accounting for potential variations in bulb wattage and ensuring the dimmer isn’t operating at its absolute limit.

Dimmers are connected to the AC mains power supply. This alternating current (AC) constantly flips direction, creating cycles of voltage peaks and dips. Most modern dimmers utilize a component called a triac. This acts like a variable resistor, electronically controlling the portion of the AC waveform that reaches the bulbs.

Dimmer wattage, DW(W) in watts is calculated by the product of number of fixtures, F and wattage of each fixture, FW(W) in watts.

Dimmer wattage, DW(W) = F * FW(W) * 1.25

DW(W) = dimmer wattage in watts, W.

F = number of fixtures.

FW(W) = wattage of each fixture in watts, W.

Dimmer Wattage Calculation:

  1. You have a room with 4 incandescent bulbs, each rated at 60 watts (FW). What minimum dimmer wattage is required?

Given: F = 4, FW(W)  = 60 W

Dimmer wattage, DW(W) = F * FW(W) * 1.25

DW(W) = 4 * 60 * 1.25

DW(W) = 300W.

  1. You have a dimmer switch rated for 400 watts (DW). You want to use dimmable LED bulbs. If you plan to connect 3 LED bulbs to the dimmer, what is the maximum wattage per bulb (FW) you can safely use?

Given: F = 3, DW(W) = 400W.

Dimmer wattage, DW(W) = F * FW(W) * 1.25

FW(W)  = DW(W) / F * 1.25

FW(W)  = 400 / 3 * 1.25

FW(W)  =  106.67W.
