Difference Between Cell and Battery

Difference between cell and battery:

Battery or Cell, both are used to store the electrical energy in the form of chemical energy or converting electrical energy into chemical energy and Chemical energy to electrical energy. One of the solid difference between cell and battery is cell is consisting of single unit and battery consists of multiple units.

Note: All living biological systems are consisting of cells.

Difference Between Cell and Battery Comparison Chart:

Basis for Comparison Cell Battery
Definition Cell is nothing but a Single unit which is used to store electrical energy or used to covert chemical energy into electrical energy. Battery is nothing but a combination of multiple cells typically they either connect in series or parallel. They are manufacturing to produce high output power.
Types The cell can be classified according to the types of electrolyte used in the column.

Dry Cell: The Dry cell uses a paste electrolyte, with enough moisture is allow to flow of electrons. Eg. AAA cell

Wet Cell: The electrolyte will be liquid form. It is also called as flooded cells, the liquid covers the internal parts of the cell.

Reserve Cell: This is little bit different from other cell. The energy will be stored in unassembled format for long period typically over than few years. Which means the battery get assembled if there is ab requirement of power.

Fuel Cell: This electro chemical cell, which coverts fuel energy to chemical energy to electrical energy. It is used in Space ship.

The battery can be classified into two types of Primary battery and Secondary battery.

Primary battery: Primary batteries are non-rechargeable batteries, whose chemical reaction cannot be reversed. This can be used immediate after assemble. After the charge exhausting, the battery can be disposed.

Secondary battery: Secondary batteries are rechargeable and whose chemical reaction can be reversed i.e. the chemical energy can be converted into electrical energy and electrical energy can be converted into chemical energy to store electrical energy. This is cannot be used after assembled. The battery must be recharged before to use.

Size The size of the cell will be Light and compact, i.e. A AAA cell consists of 1.5 Volts, 100mA and the weight of the battery is 7.6g..this can be easily carried to anywhere. Heavy I.e. 12 Volts 7.5 AH battery weights will be around 2.55 Kg Since it cannot be carried in Normal way. For transport anything we should go for special transportation.
Energy supply or Power supply The cell can produce less energy i.e. A 1.5V, 100mA AAA cell can produce the output power of 1.5 Watts of Power for one hour. Supply power for a long time. I.e. 12 V, 7.5 AH battery can produce the power around 90 Watts per hour. Since the power can be Spilt up into multiple hours according to the usage.
Applications Clocks, lamp, radio, remote control devices etc. UPS, Automobiles, inverter, emergency light etc.
Cost Cheap Costly

Conclusion of difference between cell and battery:

  • Cell is single unit of electrochemical reaction
  • Battery is multiple unit of cells in series or parallel
