Linear Density Calculator:

Enter the values of mass, m(g) and length, L(m) to determine the value of Linear density, Ld(g/m).

Enter Mass: g
Enter Length: m

Result – Linear Density: g/m

Linear Density Formula:

Linear density (Ld) is a measure of the mass per unit length of a material or object, typically used for fibers, threads, or other elongated materials. It is usually expressed in grams per metre.

Linear density provides important information about the material’s weight distribution along its length, which can influence its strength, flexibility, and application in various fields.

Mass of the entire object – the total amount of matter it contains. A heavier object (more mass) will have a higher linear density if its length stays the same.

Length of the object – the distance from one end to the other. A longer object with the same mass (M) will have a lower linear density (Ld) because the mass is spread out over a larger distance.

Linear density, Ld(g/m) in grams per metre is calculated by dividing the mass, m(g) in grams by length, L(m) in metres.

Linear density, Ld(g/m) = m(g) / L(m)

Ld(g/m) = linear density in grams per metre, g/m.

m(g) = mass in grams, g.

L(m) = length in metres, m.

Linear Density Calculation:

  1. A fiber has a mass of 150 grams and a length of 25 metres. Calculate the linear density of the fiber.

Given: m(g) = 150g, L(m) = 25m.

Linear density, Ld(g/m) = m(g) / L(m)

Ld(g/m) = 150 / 25

Ld(g/m) = 6g/m.

  1. A thread has a linear density of 0.8 grams per metre. If the total mass of the thread is 64 grams, calculate its length.

Given: m(g) = 64g, Ld(g/m) = 0.8g/m.

Linear density, Ld(g/m) = m(g) / L(m)

L(m) = m(g) / Ld(g/m)

L(m) = 64 / 0.8

L(m) = 80m.
