Enter Total Real Power: W
Enter Total Real Power: VAR

Result – Apparent Power: VA

Apparent Power Formula:

Apparent power is the total power in an AC electrical circuit, both dissipated and stored, represented as the product of the root mean square (RMS) voltage and RMS current.

Apparent power reflects the total power that must be supplied by the source to both perform work and to sustain the magnetic and electric fields in inductive and capacitive components, respectively.

Apparent power is crucial in power systems as it indicates the total power demand of electrical equipment, allowing for proper sizing of transformers and other components.

Real power, TP is the portion of power that does actual work in the circuit, such as lighting a bulb or driving a motor.

Reactive power is the portion of power that oscillates between the source and the reactive components (inductors and capacitors) in the circuit.

Apparent power is the combination of real power and reactive power, representing the total power supplied by the source. It takes into account both the useful power and the power stored and released by the reactive elements.

Apparent power, A(VA) in volt-amperes is calculated by the square root of sum of square of total real power, TP(W) in watts and square of reactive power, RP(VAR) in volt-amperes reactive.

Apparent power, A(VA) = √( TP2(W) + RP2(VAR))

A(VA) = apparent power in volt-amperes, VA.

TP(W) = total real power in watts, W.

RP(VAR) = reactive power in volt- amperes reactive, VAR.

Apparent Power Calculation:

  1. Calculate the apparent power for a circuit with a total real power of 150 watts and a reactive power of 100 VAR.

Given: TP(W) = 150W, RP(VAR) = 100VAR.

Apparent power, A(VA) = √( TP2(W) + RP2(VAR))

A(VA) = √(1502 + 1002)

A(VA) = √(22500 + 10000)

A(VA) = √32500

A(VA) = 180.28VA.

  1. Suppose a circuit has an apparent power of 200 VA and a real power of 160 watts. Calculate the reactive power.

Given: TP(W) = 160W, A(VA) = 200VA.

Apparent power, A(VA) = √( TP2(W) + RP2(VAR))

A2(VA) = TP2(W) + RP2(VAR)

2002 = 1602 + RP2(VAR)

40000 = 25600 + RP2(VAR)

RP2(VAR) = 40000 – 25600

RP2(VAR) = 14400

RP(VAR) = √14400

RP(VAR) = 120VAR.
