Attraction Force Formula

The calculation of the attraction force between two masses utilizes the gravitational constant to quantify the force that pulls the two objects towards each other.

Attraction Force, AF(N) in Newtons is calculated by multiplying the gravitational constant, G(N.m2/kg2)  in Newton metre square per kilogram square with the product of the masses of the two objects, m1(kg) and m2(kg) in kilograms and then dividing by the square of the distance between their centers, d(m) in metre square.

Attraction Force, AF(N) = G(N.m2/kg2) * m1(kg) * m2(kg) / d2(m)

AF(N) = attraction force in Newtons, N.

G(N.m2/kg2) = gravitational constant in Newton metre square per kilogram

square, N.m2/kg2, approximately 6.674×10-11 N.m2/kg2.

m1(kg) and m2(kg) = masses in kilograms, kg.

d(m) = distance in metres, m.

Attraction Force Calculation:

  1. Calculate the gravitational attraction force between two masses of 1000 kg and 500 kg separated by a distance of 10 metres.

Given: G(N.m2/kg2) = 6.674×10-11 N.m2/kg2,  m1(kg) = 1000kg, m2(kg) = 500kg, d(m) = 10m.

Attraction Force, AF(N) = G(N.m2/kg2) * m1(kg) * m2(kg) / d2(m)

AF(N) = 6.674×10-11 * 1000 * 500 / 102

AF(N) = 3.337 * 10-7 / 100

AF(N) = 3.337 * 10-9N.

  1. The gravitational force between two masses is 0.0001Newtons. The distance between the two masses is 10 metres. The mass of the second object is 1000kg. Find the mass, m1(kg).

Given: G(N.m2/kg2) = 6.674×10-11 N.m2/kg2,  AF(N) = 0.0001N, m2(kg) = 1000kg,

d(m) = 10m.

Attraction Force, AF(N) = G(N.m2/kg2) * m1(kg) * m2(kg) / d2(m)

m1(kg) = AF(N) * d2(m) / G(N.m2/kg2) * m2(kg)

m1(kg) = 0.0001 * 102 / 6.674×10-11 * 1000

m1(kg) = 0.01 / 6.674×10-8

m1(kg) = 1.498 * 105.
