Inertia Force Formula

Inertia force (IF) represents the force required to change the velocity of an object with a given inertial mass (IM) over a certain period of time (T).

Inertia Force, IF(N) in Newtons, is calculated by multiplying the inertial mass, IM(kg) in kilograms, by the change in velocity, V(m/s) in meters per second, divided by the time, T(s) in seconds over which the change occurs.

Inertia Force, IF(N) = IM(kg) * V(m/s) / T(s)

IF(N) = inertia force in Newtons, N.

IM(kg) = inertial mass in kilograms, kg.

V(m/s) = change in velocity in metre per seconds, m/s.

T(s) = time in seconds, s.

Inertia Force Calculation:

  1. Calculate the inertia force needed to accelerate a car with a mass of 1500 kg from rest to 30 m/s in 10 seconds.

Given: IM(kg) = 1500kg, V(m/s) = 30m/s, T(s)  = 10s.

Inertia Force, IF(N) = IM(kg) * V(m/s) / T(s)

IF(N) = 1500 * 30 / 10

IF(N) = 4500N.

  1. Find the time it takes for a force of 1000 N to change the velocity of a 500 kg object by 20 m/s.

Given: IM(kg) = 500kg, V(m/s) = 20m/s, IF(N) = 1000N.

Inertia Force, IF(N) = IM(kg) * V(m/s) / T(s)

T(s) = IM(kg) * V(m/s) / IF(N)

T(s) = 500 * 20 / 1000

T(s) = 10s.
