Weld Force Formula

Weld force refers to the force exerted by or on a weld joint, calculated based on the cross-sectional area of the weld and the allowable or expected stress on that weld.

Weld force, WF(lbf) in pounds-force is equated by the product of weld area, WA(in2)

In square inches and weld stress, WS(lbf/in2) in pounds-force per square inches.

Weld force, WF(lbf) = WA(in2) * WS(lbf/in2)

WF(lbf) = welf force in pounds-force, lbf.

WA(in2) = weld area in square inches, in2.

WS(lbf/in2) = weld stress in pounds-force per square inches, lbf/in2.

Weld Force Calculation:

  1. Determine the weld force for a joint with a weld area of 0.5 in2 and an allowable weld stress of 70,000 lbf/in2.

Given: WA(in2) = 0.5in2, WS(lbf/in2) = 70,000lbf/in2.

Weld force, WF(lbf) = WA(in2) * WS(lbf/in2)

WF(lbf) = 0.5 * 70,000

WF(lbf) = 35,000lbf.

  1. Assuming we have a weld force of 30,000 lbf acting on a weld area of 0.6 in2, find the weld stress .

Given: WA(in2) = 0.6in2, WF(lbf) = 30,000lbf.

Weld force, WF(lbf) = WA(in2) * WS(lbf/in2)

WS(lbf/in2) = WF(lbf) / WA(in2)

WS(lbf/in2) = 30,000 / 0.6

WS(lbf/in2) = 50,000lbf/in2.
