Lateral Force Calculator

Enter the values of mass of the object, m(kg) and lateral acceleration, LA(m/s2) to determine the value of lateral force, LF(N).

Enter Mass: kg
Enter Lateral Acceleration: m/s2

Result – Lateral Force: N

Lateral Force Formula

Lateral force refers to the force applied perpendicular to the main direction of an object’s motion or intended motion.

Lateral force, LF(N) in Newtons is equated by the product of mass of the object, m(kg) in kilograms and lateral acceleration, LA(m/s2) in metres per second squared.

Lateral force, LF(N) = m(kg) * LA(m/s2)

LF(N) = lateral force in Newtons, N.

m(kg) = mass in kilograms, kg.

LA(m/s2) = lateral acceleration in metres per second squared, m/s2.

Lateral Force Calculation:

  1. Calculate the lateral force on a car with a mass of 1500 kg, making a turn at a lateral acceleration of 2 m/s2.

Given: m(kg) = 1500kg, LA(m/s2) = 2m/s2.

Lateral force, LF(N) = m(kg) * LA(m/s2)

LF(N) = 1500 * 2

LF(N) = 3000N.

  1. Assuming we have a lateral force of 4000 N acting on an object with a mass of 2000 kg, find the lateral acceleration.

Given: m(kg) = 2000kg, LF(N) = 4000N.

Lateral force, LF(N) = m(kg) * LA(m/s2)

LA(m/s2) = LF(N) / m(kg)

LA(m/s2) = 4000 / 2000

LA(m/s2) = 2m/s2.
