Momentum to Force Formula

The conversion from momentum to force involves calculating the rate of change of momentum over time, which reflects the force applied.

Force, F(N) in Newtons, is calculated by taking the absolute value of the change in momentum, (Mf(kg.m/s) – Mi(kg.m/s)) in kilogram-metre per second and dividing it by the change in time, ∆t(s) in seconds.

Force, F(N) = (Mf(kg.m/s) – Mi(kg.m/s)) / ∆t(s)

F(N) = force in Newtons, N.

Mi(kg.m/s) =  initial momentum in kilograms metres per seconds, kg.m/s.

Mf(kg.m/s) = final momentum in kilograms metres per seconds, kg.m/s.

∆t(s) = time in seconds, s.

Given: Mf(kg.m/s)  = 30 kg.m/s, Mi(kg.m/s)  = 0 kg.m/s, ∆t(s)  = 2 s.

Force, F(N) = (Mf(kg.m/s) – Mi(kg.m/s)) / ∆t(s)

F(N) = (30 – 0) / 2

F(N) = 15N.

  1. Suppose a force of 20 N is applied which changes an object’s momentum from 50 kg.m/s to 100 kg.m/s. Calculate the time interval over which the force was applied.

Given: Mf(kg.m/s)  = 100 kg.m/s, Mi(kg.m/s)  = 50 kg.m/s, F(N) = 20N.

Force, F(N) = (Mf(kg.m/s) – Mi(kg.m/s)) / ∆t(s)

∆t(s) = (Mf(kg.m/s) – Mi(kg.m/s)) / F(N)

∆t(s) = (100 – 50) / 20

∆t(s) = 2.5s.
