Muscle Force Formula

Muscle force, MF represents the force generated by muscles to move or lift objects through mechanical advantage. This calculation is crucial for understanding the efficiency of human or animal muscles in exerting force.

Muscle Force, MF(N) in Newtons is calculated by multiplying the mass of the object, m(kg) in kilograms, by the acceleration due to gravity, g(m/s2) in metre per second squared(9.81 m/s² on Earth) and the ratio of two distances, D1(m) and D2(m) in metres. D1 is the distance from the pivot to the point where the muscle applies force, and D2 is the distance from the pivot to the point where the load is applied.

Muscle Force, MF(N) = m(kg)  * g(m/s2) * (D1(m) / D2(m))

MF(N) = muscle force in Newtons, N.

m(kg)  = mass in kilograms, kg.

g(m/s2)  = acceleration due to gravity in metres per second squared, 9.81 m/s² on Earth.

D1(m) = distance in metres, m.

D2(m) = distance in metres, m.

Muscle Force Calculation:

  1. Calculate the muscle force required to lift a 20 kg weight using a lever system where the muscle applies force 2 metres from the pivot, and the weight is 0.5 metres from the pivot.

Given: m(kg)  = 20 kg, g(m/s2)  = 9.81 m/s², D1(m) = 2 m, D2(m) = 0.5 m.

Muscle Force, MF(N) = m(kg)  * g(m/s2) * (D1(m) / D2(m))

MF(N) = 20 * 9.81 * (2/0.5)

MF(N) =196.2 * 4

MF(N) = 784.8N.

  1. Suppose you want to calculate the distance D2(m), required to lift a 50 kg object using a lever. A muscle force of 500 N, and the point where you apply this force is 2 metres from the pivot (D1(m)).

Given: m(kg)  = 50 kg, g(m/s2)  = 9.81 m/s², D1(m) = 2 m, MF(N) = 500N.

Muscle Force, MF(N) = m(kg)  * g(m/s2) * (D1(m) / D2(m))

D2(m) = m(kg)  * g(m/s2) * (D1(m) / MF(N))

D2(m) = 50 * 9.81 * (2/500)

D2(m) = 490.5 / 250

D2(m) = 1.962m.
