Speed to Force Formula:

This calculation relates the change in speed of an object to the force applied, given its mass. It’s based on the principle of Newton’s second law of motion.

Force, F(N) in Newtons is calculated by dividing the change in speed, ΔS(m/s) in metre per second and change in time, Δt(s) in seconds and multiplying by mass of the object, m(kg) in kilograms.

Force, F(N) = ( ΔS(m/s) / Δt(s) ) * m(kg)

F(N) = force in Newtons, N.

ΔS(m/s) = change in speed in metre per seconds, m/s.

Δt(s) = change in time in seconds, s.

m(kg) = mass of the object in kilograms, kg.

Speed to Force Calculation:

  1. A scooter accelerates from 0 to 30 m/s in 10 seconds. If the mass of the scooter including the rider is 120 kg, calculate the force exerted to achieve this acceleration.

Given: ΔS(m/s) = Sf – Si  = 30 – 0 = 30m/s,  Δt(s) = 10s,  m(kg) = 120kg.

Force, F(N) = ( ΔS(m/s) / Δt(s) ) * m(kg)

F(N) = (30 / 10) * 120

F(N) = 360N.

  1. Suppose a force of 200 N is applied to an object, causing its speed to change from 10 m/s to 40 m/s in 5 seconds. Find the mass of the object.

Given: ΔS(m/s) = Sf – Si  = 40 – 10 = 30m/s,  Δt(s) = 5s, F(N) = 200N.

Force, F(N) = ( ΔS(m/s) / Δt(s) ) * m(kg)

m(kg) = F(N) / ( ΔS(m/s) / Δt(s) )

m(kg) = 200 / (30/5)

m(kg) = 33.33kg.
