Tangential Force Formula:

The tangential force formula calculates the force acting tangentially to a path of motion at a certain radius from the center of rotation.

Tangential Force, TF(N) in Newtons, is equal to the mass, m(kg) in kilograms multiplied by the linear acceleration a(m/s2) in metres per second squared and the radius r(m) in metres of the circular path.

Tangential Force, TF(N) = m(kg) * a(m/s2) * r(m)

TF(N) = tangential force in Newton, N.

m(kg) = mass in kilogram, kg.

a(m/s2) = acceleration due to gravity in metre per second squared, m/s2.

r(m) = radius in metres, m.

Tangential Force Calculation:

  1. A 2 kg object is moving in a circular path with a radius of 1 metre and an acceleration of 3 m/s². Calculate the tangential force on the object.

Given: m(kg) = 2kg, a(m/s2) = 3m/s2, r(m) = 1m.

Tangential Force, TF(N) = m(kg) * a(m/s2) * r(m)

TF(N) = 2 * 3 * 1

TF(N) = 6N.

  1. A tangential force of 10 N is required to maintain an object’s circular motion. If the linear acceleration of the object is 2 m/s² and the radius of its path is 0.5 metres, find the mass of the object.

Given: TF(N) = 10N, a(m/s2) = 2m/s2, r(m) = 0.5m.

Tangential Force, TF(N) = m(kg) * a(m/s2) * r(m)

m(kg) = TF(N) / a(m/s2) * r(m)

m(kg) = 10 / 2 * 0.5

m(kg) = 10kg.
