Settling Velocity Formula:

The Settling Velocity V(m/s) in meter per second is equal to the Accelaration of Gravity g(m/s2) in meter per second square to multiply the Density of the solid ps(kg/m3) in kilogram per meter cubic is divided by the Density of the Fluid pf(kg/m3) in kilogram per meter cubic into subtracted by the value of 1 into multiply the Diameter of the solid d(m) in meter is Divided by the value of 18 to multiply the kinematic viscosity (v).

The Formula of Settling Velocity can be writtern as,

V(m/s) = g(m/s2) * ( ps(kg/m3) / pf(kg/m3) – 1 ) * d2(m) / 18 * v

Here,

V(m/s) = Settling Velocity in meter per second

g(m/s2) = Accelaration of Gravity in meter per second square

ps(kg/m3) = Density of the solid in kilogram per meter cubic

pf(kg/m3) = Density of the Fluid in kilogram per meter cubic

d(m) = Diameter of the solid in meter

v = kinematic viscosity

Example Problems for Settling Velocity:

1)Calculate the Settling Velocity and given for Gravity = 9.81m/s , Density of the solid = 500kg/m3 , Density of the Fluid = 1.300kg/m3 , Diameter = .0015m , kinematic viscosity = .45.

Answer

V = g * ( ps / pf – 1 ) * d2 / 18 * v

V = 9.81 * ( 500 / 1.300 ) * .00152 / 18 * .45

V = 0.0002122355769m/s.

2)Calculate the Density of the solid and given for Gravity = 9.81m/s , Density of the Fluid = 1.300kg/m3 , Diameter = .0015m , kinematic viscosity = .45 , Settling Velocity = 0.0002122355769m/s.

Answer

V = g * ( ps / pf – 1 ) * d2 / 18 * v

0.0002122355769 = 9.81 * ( ps / 1.300 ) * .00152 / 18 * .45

ps = 500kg/m3.
