Average Force Formula:

Average force is a concept in physics that measures the constant force applied over a period of time to cause a change in an object’s momentum.

Average Force, Favg(N) in Newtons, is calculated by multiplying the mass of the object, m(kg) in kilograms by the change in velocity, (Vf – Vi)(m/s) in meters per second, over the time, t(s) in seconds.

Average Force, Favg(N) = m(kg)  * (Vf – Vi)(m/s) / t(s)

Favg(N) = average force in Newtons, N.

m(kg)  = mass of the object in kilogram, kg.

(Vf – Vi)(m/s) = change in velocity in metre per second, m/s.

t(s) = time in second, s.

Average Force Calculation:

  1. Mass of the football 0.45 kg. Initial velocity 0 m/s (the ball is stationary). Final velocity 30 m/s (speed of the ball after the kick). Time of contact with the foot 0.05 s.

Given: m(kg) = 0.45kg, (Vf – Vi)(m/s) = (30 – 0), t(s) = 0.05s.

Average Force, Favg(N) = m(kg)  * (Vf – Vi)(m/s) / t(s)

Favg(N) = 0.45 * (30 – 0) / 0.05

Favg(N) = 270N.

  1. Suppose a car applies brakes and comes to a stop from a speed of 20m/s to 0m/s in 5 seconds. If the braking force applied is 1000 Newtons, what is the mass of the car?

Given: Favg(N) = 1000N, (Vf – Vi)(m/s) = (0 – 20), t(s) = 5s.

Average Force, Favg(N) = m(kg)  * (Vf – Vi)(m/s) / t(s)

m(kg)  = Favg(N) * t(s) / (Vf – Vi)(m/s)

m(kg)  = 1000 * 5 / -20

m(kg)  = -250kg
