DC Power Formula:

Direct Current (DC) power (Pdc), measured in watts (W), signifies the rate at which electrical energy is transferred in a circuit with constant voltage and current. It’s the workhorse powering numerous electronic devices, from smartphones to laptops.

Imagine a battery powering an LED bulb. The battery supplies a constant voltage that pushes a direct current of electrons through the circuit. The resistance of the bulb (or any electronic component) creates a potential difference (voltage), and the current overcomes this resistance, flowing in a single direction.

This flow of electrons represents the transfer of electrical energy, and the rate of this transfer is captured by DC power.

Higher current signifies more electrons flowing through the circuit per second, potentially leading to higher DC power.

Higher voltage across the circuit generally results in higher DC power, as it increases the energy delivered per unit charge.

DC power, PDC(W) in watts is calculated by the product of DC voltage, VDC(V) in volts and DC current, IDC(A) in amperes.

DC power, PDC(W) = VDC(V) * IDC(A)

PDC(W) = DC power in watts, W.

VDC(V) = DC voltage in volts, V.

IDC(A) = DC current in amperes, A.

DC Power Calculation:

  1. A resistor with a current of 0.5A is connected to a 12-volt (V) DC power source. Calculate the DC power consumed by the resistor.

Given: VDC(V) = 12V, IDC(A) = 0.5A.

DC power, PDC(W) = VDC(V) * IDC(A)

PDC(W) = 12 * 0.5

PDC(W) = 6W.

  1. A device consumes 48 watts (W) of power from a 24-volt (V) DC power source. Calculate the current flowing through the device.

Given: VDC(V) = 24V, PDC(A) = 48W.

DC power, PDC(W) = VDC(V) * IDC(A)

IDC(A) = PDC(W) / VDC(V)

IDC(A) = 48 / 24

IDC(A) = 2A.
